Why dumping happens
Often it is a lack of easy, affordable waste collection. When there is nowhere to put waste, people dump it. So a lasting fix has to solve both the mess and the cause.
Cleaning up a site safely
- Assess first. Check for hazardous waste before anyone touches it. Safety comes first.
- Sort as you clear. Separate recyclables, rubble and general waste. Less goes to landfill.
- Use the right gear. Gloves, bags and proper removal. Skips for the big stuff.
- Dispose properly. Take waste to a licensed site, not another empty lot.
The hardest part is not the cleanup — it is stopping the dump from coming back. That takes a plan.
Keeping it clean
Clean sites stay clean when the community owns them. Turn the space into something useful — a garden, a play area, a food forest. Add lighting or fencing. Set up a proper collection point nearby so waste has somewhere to go.
